Bottled Water and our Environment

24February, 2017

Although plastic water bottles are recyclable, a vast amount of these end up in landfill.  Landfills are designed to bury trash in such a way that it will be isolated from the surrounding environment. However, landfills can impact on air, water and land quality. It might not seem like much; however, swapping from bottled water to tap water will help decrease our landfill issues and benefit our environment.

We all know that the tap water in WA is not the best… sometimes you can literally smell the chlorine coming from the water. This is where Water2water filtration systems come into action.  By adding a Water2water filter to your tap water you are able to eliminate chlorine, chemicals, bad taste, odours, dirt, dust and even reduce the amount of metals in the water; while keeping the good minerals in place. As mentioned in my previous blog: http://www.water2water.com.au/filtered-water-health-benefits.

Before you go to purchase your next carton of bottled water, Here are some interesting facts I found at: https://www.coolaustralia.org/bottled-water-secondary/

  • Bottled water has to be pumped out of the ground, packaged, transported and chilled before it gets to us. This creates over 60,000 tons of greenhouses gases a year in Australia alone
  • It takes up to 3-7 litres of water and one litre of oil to produce one litre of bottled water.
  • Bottles used to package water take over 1,000 years to bio-degrade and if incinerated, they produce toxic fumes.
  • Most water bottles end in landfill.
  • The average Australian drinks 30 litres of bottled water per year.
  • Australians buy more then 118,000 tonnes of plastic drink bottles a year.
  • It takes 8 years to recoup the cost of a bottle of water by refilling the bottle with tap water.

You can also find some great information from ‘Cleanup Australia’ on this issue: http://www.cleanup.org.au/files/clean_up_australia_bottled_water_factsheet.pdf
